Why is it called ‘The Conference Of Birds’?

Its name comes from the timeless Persian masterpiece by Attar of Nishapur, Manṭiq al-Ṭayr (“The Conference of Birds”), an allegorical tale of seekers journeying through seven valleys in search of truth and Divine connection.

The title also carries a Qur’anic resonance, drawn from the words of Prophet Sulayman (a): “We have been taught the language of the birds” (Qur’an 27:16). Here, “language” signifies not only speech, but wisdom, purpose, and the sacred power of expression.

How does the conference of birds inspire us?

We see every art form — from epic poetry to film, calligraphy to performance — as a language in itself, capable of revealing the unseen and bearing witness to truth. Just as the hoopoe in the Qur’an carried messages between worlds, our artists carry messages between generations, cultures, and hearts.

The Conference of Birds is a sanctuary for creativity, remembrance, and revival — a place where the language of the soul can take flight once again.

What is our goal?

Our goal is to nurture and unite the seven classical disciplines of art — literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, theatre, cinema, and music — within a hub rooted in Shia Islamic heritage.

Core Aims and Objectives

A Home for Shia Artists and Creatives

To establish a unifying space where artists from all disciplines – poetry, literature, embroidery, painting, sculpture, photography, calligraphy, film – can connect, collaborate and find a deep sense of shared belonging, rooted in our multicultural Australian and global society guided by our Shia Islamic tradition.

Reviving Heritage through Artistic Innovation

To encourage original and meaningful artistic expression that draws from the vast reservoir of Shia history, thought, spirituality, and civilisation – while promoting fresh, contemporary forms that speak to today’s world. We also aim to honour and acknowledge the rich traditions of Indigenous art, recognising its deep connection to Country.

Showcasing and Celebrating Community Talent

To create an annual rhythm of events, festivals, exhibitions, publications, and performances that showcase the creative works of community members, giving artists the recognition, exposure, and encouragement they deserve.

Education and Artistic Development

To offer structured workshops, courses, and mentorship programs—especially for the younger generation—to develop skills in writing, poetry, film, design and other arts. These programs aim to instil pride in cultural identity, awaken creativity and provide healthy outlets for self-expression.

Economic and Community Sustainability

To support and collaborate with in-house and local businesses—such as artisans, designers, publishers and filmmakers—through commissions, partnerships, and marketplaces that facilitate viable economic pathways for cultural and artistic work.

A Living Archive of Memory and Meaning

To document, preserve and exhibit the artistic, emotional and cultural memories of the community, creating an evolving archive that can serve scholarly study and community pride.

Fostering Intergenerational and Interdisciplinary Dialogue

To bridge generations and disciplines by bringing together elders, youth, scholars and artists for shared storytelling, collaboration and exploration of the deeper human themes of faith, justice, love, and sacrifice that define Shia Muslim identity.

Cross-Community Collaboration

To build connections with other cultural and artistic institutions (local and global) by hosting dialogues, exhibitions and joint projects that broaden horizons and amplify voices, while remaining deeply rooted in our tradition.
